On Monday night, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) responded to harsh comments made by Tom Homan, who is President Donald Trump’s “border czar.” Homan called her the “dumbest congresswoman ever elected to Congress” and threatened to investigate her for allegedly hindering law enforcement efforts.
Homan’s remarks came after Ocasio-Cortez held a live webinar on Valentine’s Day to inform undocumented immigrants in her district about their rights when interacting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The webinar, titled “Know Your Rights With ICE,” offered advice on how to respond if ICE agents arrive at their homes or workplaces. It included suggestions such as not opening doors without seeing a proper warrant and documenting any interactions with ICE, either by video or notes. Ocasio-Cortez also warned about “ruses,” or tricks, that ICE agents might use to gain access.
Homan, who appeared on Newsmax, criticized the congresswoman’s actions and suggested that federal investigators should look into the webinar. “I asked the Department of Justice, where is that line on impediment?” he said during an interview with CNN. “Because you can call it ‘Know Your Rights’ all you want. We all know what the bottom line is. The bottom line is, how do they evade law enforcement?”
Homan continued his attack on Ocasio-Cortez, calling her “the dumbest congresswoman ever elected to Congress” and claiming that no other member of Congress, regardless of party, would want to teach criminal undocumented immigrants how to avoid law enforcement. He argued that Ocasio-Cortez was preventing ICE from doing its job, which he said Congress had mandated and funded.
A video of Homan’s comments was shared by journalist Aaron Rupar on X (formerly Twitter), where many pointed out that Homan seemed to stumble over his words.
Ocasio-Cortez then responded, writing, “This is why you fight these cowards.” She added, “The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail & call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.”
