The GOP’s Wild Goose Chase: How Their Bid to Impeach Joe Biden Went Bust

The Republican effort to impeach Biden was futile and a blatantly absurd.

From the outset, the Republican impeachment inquiry targeting President Joe Biden was a farce built on debunked claims and tainted by the lingering odor of Russian propaganda, as even acknowledged by the Trump administration in 2020.

The blame game among Republicans has centered on House oversight committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), but the real failure lies in the party’s collective embrace of long-discredited conspiracy theories championed by their erstwhile leader, Donald Trump.

The impeachment spectacle was a collaborative effort, with leaders like Comer, House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.), and especially House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) leading the charge.

The inquiry delved into a mishmash of topics, from Hunter Biden’s business dealings to his foray into the art world, and even veered into baseless allegations of the Justice Department’s supposed negligence in pursuing him for tax evasion. But the centerpiece was Hunter Biden’s tenure with the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, which Republicans sought to link to his father’s role in Ukrainian policy.

Yet, this narrative had been thoroughly scrutinized since 2019, when Trump’s own attempt to strong-arm Ukraine into investigating the Bidens led to his impeachment. As Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) aptly put it, the entire Burisma saga reeked of Russian disinformation.

Despite mounting evidence to the contrary, Republicans persisted, grasping at straws to validate their partisan vendetta. Even when confronted with the truth—that their allegations were founded on lies spun by Russian operatives—the GOP remained undeterred.

Their desperation reached absurd heights as they resurrected baseless claims, such as those surrounding Hunter Biden’s laptop, in a last-ditch effort to tarnish the Biden name. But each attempt only served to further expose the emptiness of their crusade.

The culmination came with the revelation that a key informant cited by Republicans had fabricated his allegations and had ties to Russian intelligence—a fact conveniently overlooked in their zeal to smear the president.

Now, faced with the reality of their folly, Republicans have sheepishly admitted defeat, acknowledging their inability to muster the support needed for impeachment. Instead, they retreat to hollow threats of referring Biden family members to the Justice Department—a move akin to a petulant child grasping at straws.

In the end, the GOP’s impeachment charade was nothing more than a futile exercise in political theater, driven by partisan animus rather than genuine concern for accountability. As the dust settles, one thing is clear: their efforts were doomed from the start, a cautionary tale of the perils of prioritizing ideology over truth.
