Marjorie Taylor Greene, the far-right Georgia representative, sparked an avalanche of mockery after claiming that federal workers ‘don’t deserve their paychecks,’ seemingly oblivious to the fact that she herself is a federal employee. The backlash came fast and furious after she defended Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during a House committee hearing on Tuesday.
Greene launched a fiery attack on her Democratic colleagues, accusing them of throwing tantrums over Musk’s attempts to reduce the size of the federal government. She brushed off their concerns about the constitutionality of Musk’s mass firings, claiming they were “an outright lie” because Musk had been appointed by the president as a special government employee.
“You can protest all you want, but the American people disagree with you,” Greene said. “Those jobs are paid for by the American taxpayers who work real jobs, earn real income, pay federal taxes, and then pay these federal employees. Federal employees do not deserve their jobs.”
She added, “Federal employees do not deserve their paychecks. And these are jobs that can be fired at will.” Greene also accused Democrats of “protecting the bureaucracy.”
But Greene’s scathing remarks quickly backfired when social media users pointed out the glaring irony: She, too, is a federal employee. The mocking comments poured in almost immediately, highlighting the hypocrisy of a sitting congresswoman attacking federal workers while benefiting from the very system she criticized.
“Someone give her a mirror, quick,” one person wrote, a sentiment shared by many others.
“Who’s gonna tell her?” another user quipped, while someone else asked, “Who pays you, Ms. Greene?”
Greene’s defense of DOGE also comes amid growing criticism of the department’s “wall of receipts”—a list of government savings claimed after Musk’s cost-cutting measures. The list was found to be riddled with errors, including faulty accounting, outdated data, and misleading claims about contracts that were actually ended during the Biden administration.
Despite these flaws, DOGE reported $65 billion in savings—up $10 billion from the previous week—but the five largest savings were quietly removed from the list after investigations revealed the mistakes.
As Greene defended Musk’s department, the mockery continued to pile on. Her attack on federal workers seemed more out of touch than ever, especially given that her own salary is funded by the very taxpayers she criticized. One commenter summed up the situation perfectly: “The hypocrisy is just too much.”
