One suspect is currently in custody following an active shooting incident at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have reported casualties, but specifics regarding the number of victims or their conditions are not yet available. The Georgia State Patrol has also responded to the active scene at the school.
Emergency response footage shows at least five ambulances and a substantial law enforcement presence at the campus. Additionally, a medical helicopter was observed airlifting patients from the scene. Video footage from the area depicted individuals gathering on a nearby football field, with students appearing to pray.
Local hospitals are treating patients with gunshot wounds related to the shooting, a hospital source told reporters.
The FBI has dispatched special agents to assist local law enforcement, according to a bureau spokesperson.
Reports from NBC and MSNBC indicate that at least four people have died and four others have been injured. Authorities have not yet released detailed information regarding the total number of victims, their conditions, or additional details about the shooter.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has directed all available state resources to assist at the scene and urged Georgians to pray for the safety of those affected, both in Barrow County and across the state.
Winder, a community about an hour outside of Atlanta, had a population of about 18,338 as of the 2020 census, according to the US Census Bureau.
