A Republican Senate candidate from North Carolina is calling for the U.S. military to be deployed on American soil — not for national defense, but to go after “Antifa” and what he describes as left-wing extremists responsible for a “literal civil war” erupting in American cities.
Don Brown, a former Navy JAG officer and current GOP candidate for U.S. Senate, appeared Monday on Real America’s Voice, where he said President Donald Trump should invoke the Insurrection Act to crack down on what he sees as left-wing chaos and lawlessness.
“I just feel like we’re in a civil war here in America,” host Jake Novak said during the segment. “I wish, I mean, I’m not trying to be hysterical here, but I don’t know what else to call it. It’s becoming kinetic. People are dying, literally. I wonder if you’re as alarmed as I am?”
Brown didn’t hesitate: “You’ve nailed it on the head,” he said. “There is a literal civil war on the streets.”
Brown argued that Trump not only has the authority but the responsibility to respond with force, claiming the federal government must act where local leaders won’t.
“The President of the United States has the authority to send in the National Guard to these cities where domestic tranquility and rampant crime have taken over, with or without the request from the local authorities,” Brown said. “You look into the Insurrection Act. And when Americans’ constitutional rights and liberties are being threatened, the president can go ahead and send in troops.”
Brown repeatedly referred to “Antifa” and unnamed “communist left-wing groups” as the root cause of the disorder, accusing Democratic leaders of enabling chaos to placate them.
“The president has the authority to do it,” he continued. “And these local leaders who are soft on crime and pro-crime and just want to kiss up to antifa and all these communist left-wing groups that are intent on unraveling civil society, they’re not relevant. So I’m going to encourage the president to do what he needs to do.”
His comments come in the wake of renewed scrutiny over Trump’s use of federal forces in cities like Los Angeles, California — where agents were deployed during protests near a federal immigration facility. Trump also ordered the military into Portland, Oregon, claiming there’s “raging war” in the state.
Oregon’s Democratic Governor, Tina Kotek, has pushed back hard against such tactics.
“There is no insurrection or threat to public safety that necessitates military intervention in Portland or any other city in our state,” Kotek said in a statement, referring to the protests as “small.”
Both the state of Oregon and the city of Portland have filed lawsuits, challenging the legal basis for the deployment of federal forces without state consent.
Despite this, Brown says he’s ready to see more.
