During the Monday hearing centered around Donald Trump’s trial date, there were several instances where the former president’s legal team and U.S. District Court Judge Tanya S. Chutkan were at odds. On Monday evening, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow dramatically recited some of the contentious exchanges that occurred in court.
In a particular incident, John Lauro, an attorney representing Trump, faced the judge’s reprimand for his refusal to provide alternative court date options before the year 2026. Despite repeated requests from the judge for alternative dates, Lauro consistently declined to offer any. As a result, Judge Chutkan proceeded to designate March 4, 2024, as the trial date.
Furthermore, the judge made it clear that she would not consider Trump’s political affiliation in this decision, much like she wouldn’t take an athlete’s game schedule into consideration when arranging trial dates. During the Monday hearing.
“Setting a trial date does not depend and should not depend on the defendant’s personal and professional obligations. Mr Trump, like any defendant, will have to make the trial date work regardless of his schedule,” Judge Chutkan asserted at Monday’s hearing.
In a surprising revelation, Chutkan mentioned in court that she had been coordinating with a New York judge to schedule trials. Although this practice isn’t uncommon, this was the first time the American public became aware of it.
The trial schedule has already been published online, and the initial motions for the case are expected to be submitted by October 9th.
