MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow noted that Tuesday’s arraignment on 37 federal charges was not the only bad news for former president Donald Trump.
Contrary to his predictions of massive protests in response to his arrest, Maddow pointed out that there were no significant demonstrations in Miami, just as there were few supporters outside the location of his arrest in New York back in March.
“Turns out the people of the United States would stand for it,” Maddow said, noting there were no mass protests in Miami as Trump had predicted.
Maddow emphasized that there is no shame in lacking protest and public support during an arrest and indictment, except when you have actively encouraged and promised such reactions. She expressed that this outcome is personally embarrassing for Trump.
“There’s no shame in not having people protest your arrest and indictment,” she said. “Except when you have begged people to, and told people to, and in fact promised publicly that people would.”
Lawrence O’Donnell, another MSNBC host, echoed Maddow’s sentiment, emphasizing that Trump is painfully aware that he no longer holds the power to summon crowds at will.
O’Donnell stated that Trump, more than anyone else, knows that people won’t rally to his cause anymore, referring to the potential lack of public support in Georgia for his next possible indictment.
“They won’t come to Georgia. They’re not coming,” O’Donnell said. “That stuff is completely over… he doesn’t have that anymore.”
Despite facing charges, the former president is currently pursuing the GOP presidential nomination for the 2024 election as a way to evade accountability.
