A new report revealed on Wednesday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have been discussing a new coronavirus relief package and Republicans are getting nervous.
According to Politico, Pelosi feels as if a one-time $1,200 check is not enough for Americans during this pandemic.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) expressed optimism the two sides could cut a deal — but Democrats acknowledge President Donald Trump needs to empower Mnuchin to bring everyone on board.
“Why won’t the president follow Mnuchin to negotiate and we can find a deal? If we found a deal on a 2.2 trillion package three weeks ago we can find a deal on” this, said Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.). “But we’re not going to do it unless the president is telling his team, ‘Hey sit down and negotiate.'”
Regardless, Republicans are nervous that Pelosi will come up with an agreement with Mnuchin.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi “has a lot of whole other demands. I know that Secretary Mnuchin is negotiating with her. And that’s all well and good,” Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said in an interview this Wednesday. “It’s still got to pass the Senate. And I think there are a lot of Republicans that are going to have a lot of questions of whatever the secretary and the speaker agree to. Just because they agreed to it, it’s not a done deal.”
