Four Republican Senators are breaking ranks with President Donald Trump over tariffs on Canada. Senator Tim Kaine’s (D-VA) resolution to remove Trump’s emergency powers to impose these tariffs is set to gain the support of at least four GOP Senators, CNN’s Haley Talbot reported.
Kaine shared that when he approached Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Kentucky senator didn’t even let him finish his question. McConnell immediately said, “I’m with you.” Kaine confirmed that along with McConnell, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Rand Paul (R-KY) would also vote in favor of his resolution.
Kaine needs at least four Republican votes to pass his resolution, and with these senators on his side, it looks like he has the support he needs. However, not all Republicans are on board. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) told CNN’s Manu Raju that while he won’t support Kaine’s resolution, he has “some concerns with the trade policies being discussed” and plans to wait for more details before deciding on any action.
President Trump responded to the rebellion from his party members by attacking the four GOP Senators on his Truth Social platform. He accused McConnell, Collins, Murkowski, and Paul of playing into the hands of Democrats and drug cartels by opposing tariffs that would increase the cost of fentanyl coming into the U.S. from Canada.
“They are playing with the lives of the American people, and right into the hands of the Radical Left Democrats and Drug Cartels,” Trump wrote. “The Senate Bill is just a ploy of the Dems to show and expose the weakness of certain Republicans, namely these four, in that it is not going anywhere because the House will never approve it and I, as your President, will never sign it.”
The president continued: “Why are they allowing Fentanyl to pour into our Country unchecked, and without penalty. What is wrong with them, other than suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, commonly known as TDS?”
