Actor Mel Gibson is stirring the pot again, this time with wild speculation about the recent California wildfires. During an appearance on The Ingraham Angle on Fox News, Gibson suggested the fires might have been started deliberately, calling their timing and circumstances “convenient.”

The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles have been a hot topic, not just for their destruction but also for the political drama surrounding them. President-elect Donald Trump has been attacking California Governor Gavin Newsom, blaming him for the fires and spreading questionable claims about their causes. Meanwhile, local officials have faced criticism for their handling of the disaster, which was worsened by powerful Santa Ana winds.

Gibson, who revealed his house was destroyed in the fire, joined Trump in criticizing Newsom. But he didn’t stop there—he floated some eyebrow-raising theories about what might really be going on.“Well, you know, I know they were messing with the water, letting reserves go for one reason or another. They’ve been doing that a while,” Gibson said. “California has a lot of problems that sort of baffle the mind as far as why they do things.

“And then in events like this, you sort of look, well, is it on purpose? Which, it’s an insane thing to think. But one begins to ponder whether or not there is a purpose in mind.”

He even hinted that the fires could be part of a scheme to clear people off valuable property, adding, “What could it be? You know, what do they want? The state empty? I don’t know.”

Host Laura Ingraham chimed in, noting that there’s been talk of rebuilding California in a way that favors high-density housing over single-family homes, something climate advocates have been pushing. “In this case, like goodbye single-family homes. Hello high-density housing!” she said.

Gibson picked up on this and said it reminded him of “the old cattle barons clearing people off the land.” He then shared more of his theories:

“And that the wind conditions were right and that there are people ready and willing and able to start fires. And are they commissioned to do so? Or they just acting on their own volition? I don’t know. But they seem pretty well equipped. Some of these people that they’re catching.”

Gibson has a history of dabbling in conspiracy theories, and his comments here are just the latest example. While it’s easy to dismiss his remarks as baseless, they echo a broader distrust some people have toward government and rebuilding efforts in California.
