Representative Matt Gaetz openly criticized his party’s approach to impeaching President Joe Biden and denounced Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) work on various Biden probes as a “failure theater.”
According to NBC News, the Florida Republican, in a private call with major GOP donors, said that the recent impeachment inquiry launched by his party is less about genuinely removing Biden from office and more about creating damaging headlines for the president in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
“I don’t believe that we are embarking upon a legitimate impeachment of Joe Biden,” he stated. “They’re trying to engage in a sort of ‘forever war’ of impeachment. And like many of our forever wars, it will drag on forever and end in a bloody draw.”
Later in the call, Gaetz expanded on what he sees as the GOP’s current strategic intent behind the inquiry.
“I just don’t get the sense that it’s for the sake of impeachment,” he remarked. “I think it’s for the sake of having another negative thing to say about Joe Biden.”
Gaetz has also publicly criticized Republicans’ attempts to investigate Biden for alleged corruption. Earlier this week, he characterized Rep. Jim Jordan’s (R-OH) work on various Biden probes as resembling “failure theater.”
