Four people are dead and at least 20 others are injured after gunfire ripped through a packed bar on St. Helena Island, South Carolina early Sunday morning, according to authorities.
The shooting happened just after 1 a.m. at Willie’s Bar and Grill, where around 100 people had gathered for a late-night crowd. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that several victims were found with gunshot wounds at the scene, and many others ran for their lives.
Some of the injured were taken to the hospital by ambulance — four in critical condition. Others arrived on their own, trying to get help as chaos unfolded.
Four people were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not yet been released.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The scale of the violence has shaken this usually quiet coastal community. What started as a night out ended in panic, bloodshed, and loss.
“This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities haven’t named any suspects, but confirmed they are “investigating persons of interest.” No arrests have been made public so far.
Details about what led up to the shooting remain unclear. Investigators are still working the scene and talking to witnesses.
