A self-published memoir on Amazon has led to the arrest of a Michigan man who chronicled his involvement in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Nathan Thornsberry, a 42-year-old Marine Corps veteran from North Branch, Michigan, was taken into custody on Thursday. He faces felony charges for obstructing law enforcement during a civil disorder and assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers.
The Flint, Michigan FBI office received a tip that led them to Thornsberry’s book, January 6: A Patriot’s Story, which was self-published under the pseudonym Nathaniel Matthews. According to authorities, the memoir’s biographical details and the Amazon account information, registered under Thornsberry’s real name, linked him directly to the publication.
The book, available on Amazon for $6.99, describes itself as an “eyewitness account of the events of January 6th, 2021.” Its promotional material argues against the mainstream media’s portrayal of the Capitol riot, claiming the reporting has been “selective and misleading.” It details the author’s perspective on the motivations behind the rioters and their actions that day.
Court documents reveal that Thornsberry’s memoir includes statements reflecting his belief that “a shadowy organization has infiltrated our society, our institutions, and not just in the United States, but across the world – our schools, universities, intelligence agencies, our news and our entertainment, and our elected officials at both the state and federal levels.”
Evidence from body cameras reportedly shows Thornsberry, dressed in a Marines-themed leather jacket, physically confronting police officers by ramming a barrier and shouting provocative challenges.
Prosecutors argue that Thornsberry’s book and his actions on January 6, 2021 demonstrate his direct involvement in the insurrection.
Since the events of that day, more than 1,400 individuals have been charged with related offenses.
