Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) slammed Donald Trump on Tuesday night, accusing the former President of working against American interests for praising Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

“Former President Trump’s adulation of Putin today – including calling him a ‘genius’ – aids our enemies,” Cheney tweeted. “Trump’s interests don’t seem to align with the interests of the United States of America.”

Cheney’s teet came in response to comments Trump made during a Tuesday interview on “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show,” where he attacked Joe Biden and called Putin’s move on Ukraine “genius” and “a wonderful thing.”

Biden and said that under his own presidency, Putin never would have recognized two breakaway territories in eastern Ukraine and moved troops into the Donbas region.

Trump also praised Putin as “pretty savvy” and appeared to celebrate Russia’s military might.

“I said, ‘How smart is that?’ He’s going to go in and be a peacekeeper,” Trump said. “That’s the strongest peace force. We could use that on our southern border. That’s the strongest peace force I’ve ever seen. There were more army tanks than I’ve ever seen. They’re going to keep peace, all right.”

In 2018, Trump came under fire during the Helsinki summit when he sided with the Russian leader and attacked U.S. intelligence for reporting that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.
