During a speech at Saint Anselm College’s Institute of Politics on Tuesday, GOP Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) unloaded on former President Donald Trump and condemned Republican leaders for enabling his “irrational” efforts to undermine democracy and the rule of law.
Cheney called her fellow Republicans “willing hostages to a dangerous man” and encouraged them to raise up in defense of the constitution.
“We are… confronting a domestic threat that we have never faced before,” Cheney warned. “A former president who’s attempting to unravel the foundations of our Constitutional Republic, aided by political leaders who have made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.”
Cheney also castigated GOP leadership for inviting Trump to a fundraiser in which he continued to peddle his ‘Big Lie’ about the 2020 presidential election.
“He reportedly said once again that the insurrection was on November 3rd, and that the events on January 6th, when a violent mob invaded the Capitol in an effort to overturn the will of the American people… that those events were a protest,” she said.
She added: “Political leaders who sit silently in the face of these false and dangerous claims are aiding the former president who is at war with the rule of law.”
