The Lincoln Project, a group of anti-Trump conservatives, has formally urged the United States Department of Justice to investigate whether former President Donald Trump engaged in illegal activities by offering Robert F. Kennedy Jr. a position in his administration in exchange for his endorsement.
In a detailed letter, the group outlines claims that Kennedy had been in communication with both Trump’s campaign and Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign in recent months, exploring whether either might offer him a role in their administrations in return for his support.
The letter highlights allegations that Trump may have offered Kennedy a significant position within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including the potential role of Secretary of HHS, as part of a quid pro quo arrangement for Kennedy’s endorsement in the 2024 presidential election. This claim is further supported by a recent Washington Post article, where a family member of Kennedy alleged that the endorsement deal was made in exchange for a high-profile Cabinet position focused on health issues.
The letter acknowledges that while the DOJ has not previously prosecuted politicians for trading government positions for endorsements, this situation is unprecedented. It also notes that Trump is already facing legal scrutiny over allegations of election interference, making this new claim even more pressing.
“This is a serious matter involving Trump’s alleged illegal interference in the electoral process at the highest level,” the letter asserts. “An investigation into these claims is urgently needed.”
Although Trump has not confirmed whether he would appoint Kennedy to a position, he has included the controversial Kennedy on his transition team.
