Donald Trump has decided that reopening the country, despite being warned by health experts not to do so, is the only way he will increase his chances at winning reelection.
A new report by Politico revealed on Tuesday that federal officials have been talking about how deadly it would be to reopen the country now.
Politico obtained leaked audio that shows officials from multiple government agencies privately warning that the virus is about to take a horrific toll on the United States.
The audio comes from a conference call that took place on May 1st.

Trump has been boasting that every person that has needed a coronavirus test has gotten one and that ventilators are no longer in shortage.
“We’ve ensured a ventilator for every patient who needs one,” he said. “The testing and the masks and all of the things, we’ve solved every problem. We solved it quickly.”
But according to the recording, hospitals will soon be shorthanded on supplies and death tolls will increase.
“The numbers of deaths definitely will be high,” Daniel Jernigan, director of the Center for Disease Control’s influenza division, said at the start of the call.
Another unidentified official chimed in to warn that lifting all restrictions would lead to a surge in cases that would overwhelm hospitals.
“If, at the end of stay-at-home orders, you were to lift everything and go back to normal business, and not have any community mitigation, you would expect to see in the second week in May we begin to increase again in ventilator uses,” the official said. “Which means cases increase, and by early June, we surpass the number of ventilators we currently have.”
