A prominent member of the Republican House Freedom Caucus said that current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) may not be elected speaker because he simply doesn’t have the votes.”
Speaking with NBC News, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) suggested that McCarthy is getting ahead of himself by boasting on conservative news outlets about what he plans to do when he is voted House speaker in January.
“He doesn’t have the votes,” Biggs bluntly stated before suggesting the California Republican is “in Denial.”
“Some of the stages of grief include denial, so there will be some denial and then there’ll be the stage of bargaining where people are trying to figure out … will there be some kind of consensus candidate that emerges,” he said.
McCarthy needs 218 votes to be elected Speaker, so he can only afford 4 defections from his own party and so far five GOP lawmakers have said they will not vote for him.
As noted by NBC News, McCarthy is “in a precarious position,” adding that “if the conservatives don’t blink and McCarthy refuses to back down, it could result in a chaotic floor fight with House members taking multiple votes for speaker — something that has not happened in over a century.”
