In a recent appearance on Fox News, Alina Habba, a lawyer representing former President Donald Trump, publicly urged Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to align with her client. Habba emphasized Trump’s unwavering support for Kavanaugh during allegations of past sexual misconduct, suggesting that Kavanaugh would reciprocate by supporting the former president.
“You know, people like Kavanaugh, who the president fought for, who the president went through hell to get into place,” Habba said, adding that the justice will “step up” for the former president.
CNN host Phil Mattingly expressed astonishment at the video, contemplating the potential fallout if a Democrat’s lawyer made a similar statement about a judge appointed by Democrats. Mattingly highlighted the apparent double standard, describing the situation as “bonkers.”
Panelist John Avlon agreed, noting the audacity of Habba’s appeal. Avlon remarked on the unusual openness of her statement, emphasizing that she explicitly stated Kavanaugh would side with the president due to his appointment. Mattingly pointed out the significance, exclaiming, “She’s his lawyer!”
Avlon concluded by expressing concern over the implications of such statements, stating that they undermine the fundamental principles of law and judicial independence. He suggested that Habba’s assertion puts Kavanaugh in a challenging position, contradicting the traditional notion of an impartial judiciary.
