Joe Manchin, the Democratic Senator from West Virginia known for his controversial positions on climate change and opposition to his party’s agenda, revealed on Sunday that he has not yet made a decision regarding a potential third-party presidential run in 2024.
During an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” the Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee was asked about the possibility of a third-party presidential run. In response, Manchin stated that he is not ruling anything in or out.
Manchin declined to provide specific details but stressed the necessity of having a contingency plan, stating that if the current political landscape continues to move towards extreme ideologies on both sides, a middle-ground approach would be necessary. He acknowledged the importance of having an alternative option available.
“If Plan A shows that we’re going to the far reaches of both sides, the far left and the far right, and the people don’t want to go to the far left and the far right, they want to be governed from the middle. I think there is… you better have that Plan B available and ready to go,” he said.
When pressed further about his consideration of a presidential run, Manchin responded, “Not ruling anything in, not ruling anything out.”
Manchin has not yet revealed his decision regarding a reelection bid in 2024. Recent polls have shown a decline in his popularity, and Governor Jim Justice has announced his intention to compete against Manchin for his Senate seat.
