According to a new Dallas Morning News-University of Texas poll, Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden has built a 5-point lead over President Donald Trump in Texas, as unease over Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic mounts in the once-reliable red state.
If the general election were held today, Biden would carry Texas, with 46% of the vote to Trump’s 41%. 14% were undecided or named someone else, the poll found.
Biden’s lead is significant because it’s outside the margin of error, which is plus or minus 2.24 percentage points.
Kenneth Bryant Jr., a UT-Tyler political scientist who helped design the poll said that Biden’s lead comes as independents some Republicans are souring on Trump’s chaotic administration.
“While President Trump has and still enjoys near universal approval from Republicans, and overwhelming disfavor from Democrats, he has lost considerable ground among the folks in the middle, who may ultimately decide who wins Texas in November,” Bryant said.
Biden is also leading nationwide according to recent polls.
