The House Select Committee investigating the January 6 insurrection has obtained more than two dozen text messages between conservative activist Virginia “Ginni” Thomas —the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas— and former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, CNN reported Thursday.
Citing multiple sources familiar with the messages, the news network reported that the text messages took place between early November 2020 and mid-January 2021.
Thomas, a staunch Trump supporter, recently revealed that she attended the pro-Trump rally that preceded the US Capitol attack, but says she “played no role” in planning the events of that day. However, recent revelations appear to show that she was heavily invested in promoting Trump’s “Big Lie” about the 2020 election.
According to a report published by The New York Times, Mrs. Thomas led a network of her husband’s aides to set in motion a campaign to overturn the 2020 election after Trump’s November defeat. That effort ultimately culminated with the deadly riot by a mob of Trump supporters who believed the election was stolen from him.
The revelation of text messages between Thomas and Meadows comes as legal ethics experts see her activism as a potential conflict of interest for Justice Thomas’ work on some Supreme Court cases, noted CNN.
