House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is being slammed over his “spineless” response to the indictment of Rep. George Santos (R-NY), who was arrested on 13 counts of wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and lying to the House of Representatives.
Speaking with reporters after the indictment, McCarthy was given yet another chance to call for the controversial congressman to resign. He didn’t.
“I think in America, you’re innocent till proven guilty,” McCarthy said.
After reporters pressed him on whether it was time for Santos to leave Congress, McCarthy dismissed the idea.
“He will go through his time in trial and let’s find out how the outcome is,” he said.
Naturally, Twitter users weren’t impressed by McCarthy’s response and wasted no time to blast the California Republican as a “coward.”
Watch McCarthy’s remarks and some of the reactions below.
How the hell does he even stand up straight without a backbone?! https://t.co/ds8pYrOVbJ

McMarthy is not going to want to expel Santos because he’s not sure he would win the seat again & he doesn’t want to give an advantage to Democrats. So Republicans will support a criminal as is their routine.

The thing that scares me is that this guy is third in line to the presidency. https://t.co/mHaP0iTWTX

@SpeakerMcCarthy total liar. You’d have us believe you have not heard the charges though the rest of the world has? How many charges do you need to hear before you remove him?

There are loads of "firsts" being handed out these days. Obama, the first Black president; Harris, the first woman VP; Nikki Haley, the first Indian elected governor, etc.
But the most impressive first must be Kevin McCarthy, the first invertebrate ever elected to Congress!— Aletheia (Greek for truth) (@TimBarr86902550) May 10, 2023
