Donald Trump sparked outrage late Sunday night when he posted on Truth Social, claiming that the pardons issued by former President Joe Biden before leaving office were now “VOID, VACANT, AND OF NO FURTHER FORCE OR EFFECT.”
Trump made it clear that he was targeting people who had been pardoned by Biden, warning them that they were now “subject to investigation at the highest level.” These pardons included those given to members of the House committee that investigated the U.S. Capitol riot, whom had not been charged with any crimes.
In his post, Trump claimed that Biden’s pardons were signed using an autopen, a machine that allows signatures to be automatically copied. He pointed to a report from a right-wing group, which had suggested that Biden used the autopen frequently. Trump argued that this meant Biden never truly signed the pardons and didn’t even know about them. He also joked that the “real President” during Biden’s time in office was whoever controlled the autopen.
Trump’s statements quickly drew criticism. Many called his comments “dictator sh*t” and questioned whether his actions were even legal. Some pointed out that his words could end up hurting him in the long run.
On Twitter, people shared their thoughts, with one user posting a photo calling Trump a “dick-traitor.”
Another user described Trump as a “mentally ill, mean spirited, uninformed elderly man” who was misusing his power.
A few people warned that this was a dangerous path, with one user writing, “We are truly in uncharted waters.”
Others simply wanted Trump to disappear from the political scene. One person wrote, “One day we will wake up to his obituary.”
Others were concerned about his influence on the country, saying that his focus on “us vs them” distractions was hurting the U.S. for his own personal gain.
Some were alarmed by what they saw as Trump’s growing authoritarian behavior, with one user saying, “This is getting crazy — scary. He has been one a full out dictator.”
