The House Select Committee investigating the Jan 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol has signaled that it could initiate contempt proceedings against former President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, after he indicated he intends to bail on a scheduled Friday interview with House investigators.

“Mr. Giuliani is an important witness to the conspiracy to overthrow the government and he remains under subpoena,” committee spokesperson Tim Mulvey said in a statement, according to Politico. “If he refuses to comply the committee will consider all enforcement options,” he declared.

Giuliani had originally agreed to take part in an interview Friday, but told investigators Thursday he would not take part over disagreements over how the interview will be recorded.

As noted by Politico, the former New York Mayor “was at the center of nearly every aspect of Trump’s effort to overturn the election. He traveled to state capitals to encourage legislators to rescind President Joe Biden’s electors, propagated numerous conspiracy theories about the integrity of the 2020 election and huddled at the White House with lawmakers and top Trump aides to strategize about last-ditch efforts to keep Trump in power.”

If held in contempt of Congress, Giuliani will join four other Trump allies that are now facing jail time for refusing to cooperate with the Jan 6 investigation: former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, former trade adviser Peter Navarro and longtime Trump social media manager Dan Scavino.
