Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has become a pariah amid the political fallout of the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump Supporters. On Saturday, Loews Hotels announced that it won’t host a planned fundraiser next month for the Missouri Republican at one of its Florida properties.
“We are horrified and opposed to the events at the Capitol and all who supported and incited the actions. In light of those events and for the safety of our guests and team members, we have informed the host of the Feb. fundraiser that it will no longer be held at Loews Hotels,” the company said in a statement posted to Twitter (read it below).
While the statement doesn’t mention Hawley by name, a political action committee affiliated with Hawley’s re-election was scheduled to hold a Valentine’s Day weekend fundraiser for the senator Feb. 12-15 at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel in Orlando, Fla., near the Universal Orlando theme park.
“Please join Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) for a Fun-Filled-Family-Friendly Orlando Weekend Event,” a flier for the event read.
Loews’ announcement is the latest blow for Hawley, who objected to President-elect Joe Biden’s win even after pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol to demand the results be overturned.
Publisher Simon & Schuster announced last week that it would cancel the publication of a forthcoming book by Hawley over his role in last week’s deadly riots.
Hawley has threatened legal action against the publisher, calling its decision a “direct assault on the First Amendment.“
