Former national security adviser John Bolton slammed President Trump’s handling of international affairs, saying his mind is “full of mush” and that he just says whatever comes to mind.

Bolton appeared on CNN’s The Source on Monday, shortly after the U.S. voted against a UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“There are a lot of strange votes at the United Nations that I’ve been part of,” Bolton told host Kaitlan Collins. “What stands out isn’t just the vote, but the fact that we are now on the same side as what’s always been NATO’s biggest threat.”

“We’ve sided with NATO’s main enemy in this vote,” he added. “It’s unbelievable that a president would do this.”

Seventeen other countries joined the U.S. in voting against the resolution, which came on the three-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This marks a shift, as Trump seems to be aligning himself with Russia in the conflict. He recently had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him a dictator and blaming him for letting the war happen.

Bolton was asked if Trump’s refusal to call Putin a dictator was part of a negotiation strategy. He replied, “Trump’s supporters claim everything he says is a negotiating tactic, even when he contradicts himself. But I think it’s clear his mind is full of mush, and he just says whatever comes to mind.”

Bolton, who was also U.S. ambassador to the U.N., pointed out that Trump and Putin have a friendly relationship. He suggested Trump wouldn’t call Putin a dictator because of that friendship. He also mentioned the ongoing tension between Trump and Zelensky, explaining that calling Zelensky an authoritarian is easy for Trump.

“This is someone who’s not fit to be president,” Bolton said about Trump. “He can’t tell who America’s friends are, and who its enemies are.”
