A Florida FedEx driver was arrested last week after police said he dumped a bunch of packages on the side of the road and in nearby woods because he was running behind on his route.
Latavion Lewis, a contracted worker for FedEx, was taken into custody by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office. He’s facing charges including theft, illegal dumping, and fraud.
The whole thing started when local residents in Bonifay, Florida, found several FedEx packages scattered in the woods and along the road. People called the police, and the sheriff’s office got in touch with FedEx to figure out who was responsible.
The investigation led to Lewis, an Alabama man, who agreed to meet with deputies. When he spoke to the police, he admitted that he dumped the packages because it was late, and he didn’t want to take them back to the warehouse.
In total, 44 packages were found and returned to the Bonifay Post Office, where they were sent on to the right customers.
Sheriff John Tate praised his team for quickly tracking down the driver and thanked the local post office for helping get the packages back on track.
FedEx confirmed that Lewis is no longer working for them. A company spokesperson said the situation was “completely unacceptable” and that they were fully cooperating with the investigation.
Bonifay, a small town in the Florida panhandle, is about 100 miles south of Tallahassee, near the Alabama border.
