A Florida official who voted against an ordinance to wear masks in his County is in critical condition after testing positive for COVID-19, Newsweek reports.

St. Johns County commissioner Paul Waldron was admitted into the hospital’s ICU days after voting against a countywide facemask mandate to reduce the spread of the virus in his county, which is just south of Jacksonville.

“It might be one of the worst cases of cosmic irony,” noted Complex magazine. “The hospital is working hard to keep him comfortable and continuously monitoring him,” the commissioner’s daughter she wrote in a Facebook post. “His blood gas levels have improved today and numbers are holding.”

It’s really hard to muster much sympathy for people like these, people who stubbornly refuse to accept science and common sense and in the end work against the common good. Commissioner Waldron had voted against a countywide mandate requiring all residents to wear face masks as a way to prevent the spread of COVID-19 last week.
