U.S. federal authorities have issued a joint intelligence bulletin, warning of possible retaliatory attacks following the recent attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The bulletin, first reported by POLITICO, warns that violent right-wing extremists or others seem to be plotting to carry out retaliatory acts of violence in response to the incident. While no specific targets are mentioned, the agencies noted historical instances where extremists have targeted perceived political or ideological opponents.
“The FBI and DHS remain concerned about the potential for follow-on or retaliatory acts of violence following this attack,” the bulletin stated. “Particularly given that individuals in some online communities have been threatening, encouraging, or referencing acts of violence in response to the attempted assassination.”
The warning comes amidst what authorities describe as a “heightened threat environment,” exacerbated by deep political polarization as both the Republican and Democratic parties prepare for their respective nominating conventions in Milwaukee and Chicago.
The agencies highlighted that Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old assailant in Saturday’s attack, had possessed improvised explosive devices both in his vehicle and residence, and had ordered potentially hazardous materials over recent months.
Authorities have yet to determine Crooks’ motive; he was shot and killed by Secret Service agents after opening fire at the rally, resulting in one fatality and critically injuring two others.
As the November elections approach, federal and state law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to prevent political violence and lone-wolf attacks targeting elected officials, candidates, law enforcement, and media personnel. The Justice Department has pledged vigorous action against threats aimed at election workers and facilities.
Threats across the political spectrum have been on the rise, including instances where supporters of Trump have allegedly sent death threats and mailed envelopes containing suspicious substances to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, following his office’s prosecution involving Trump. Additionally, Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows was targeted with a “swatting” incident after a decision regarding Trump’s eligibility for the state’s 2024 primary ballot.
