In an astonishing interview, Dr. Phil McGraw questioned former President Donald Trump about whether he thought President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were “okay” with him being shot.
This surreal moment occurred during an interview with Trump that aired on McGraw’s Merit+ platform. Dr. Phil, known for his support of Trump, broached the July assassination attempt, which left Trump with a bloody ear, with an extraordinarily bizarre question.
“I’m not saying that they wanted you to get shot, but do you think it was okay with them if you did?,” Dr. Phil asked.
“I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know. There’s a lot of hatred. I don’t know why,” Trump replied before launching into a bewildering mix of self-praise and denial. He extolled his achievements, from reviving the economy to rebuilding the military and cutting taxes, only to suggest that the vitriol from his opponents might have somehow contributed to the violence he faced.
“I had a great presidency. We had the best economy we’ve ever had. We had job numbers that were unbelievable. And then you had bounce back jobs, you know, the jobs after a pandemic. They could have bounced back. Or pandemics, whatever. You have something like that, an event. You have a bounce back. As it gets better, you bounce back. And they like to try and claim this. Yes, but those are our jobs,” Trump said.
“We had a tremendous president, Trump continued. “We rebuilt the military. We knocked out ISIS. I had no wars. So many things. We did the largest tax cuts ever, which is what gave us the great economy, by the way, largest regulation cuts. We were we were choking with regulation.
Trump argued that his opponents, who branded him as a threat to democracy, could have incited such violence, insisting that their rhetoric was so toxic it might have fueled the attack against him.
“But, you know, when you do things like that, the other side that disagrees with that or for whatever reason doesn’t want to do it. It’s, there’s a lot of a lot of hatred is generated. If I give you an example, they’re saying I’m a threat to democracy,” Trump said.
“No, they’re a threat. They’ve weaponized government. They’re a threat. But that turned to be like one of their lines. You know that Trump is a threat. I’m not a threat to democracy at all. They are a threat to democracy,” he asserted.
“But they would say that that was standard line. Just keep saying it. And you know, that can get assassins or potential assassins going. That’s a terrible thing I used to say– and you fight it. But everybody — it was a standard line for them. Donald Trump is a threat to democracy. I’m just the opposite,” Trump claimed. “I’m the one that fixed our military. I’m the one that knocked out ISIS. I’m the one I did so much. I also took a bullet. But maybe that bullet is because of their rhetoric. You know, it’s really nasty rhetoric.”
The absurdity of Dr. Phil’s question—wondering if Biden and Harris were somehow “okay” with the shooting—highlights the surreal nature of this interview. Instead of addressing the gravity of the situation, it devolved into a strange exploration of imagined conspiracies and self-justification.
