Docs Delayed Life-Saving Care for GOP Congresswoman Under Abortion Ban—She Says It’s the Left’s Fault

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) blamed the left after doctors hesitated to treat her under Florida’s strict abortion ban.

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.), a strong opponent of abortion, faced a life-threatening medical emergency last year—and when doctors hesitated to treat her, she didn’t blame Florida’s strict abortion ban. She blamed the left.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cammack shared how her ectopic pregnancy—where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus—almost cost her her life. It was May 2023. She was five weeks pregnant, bleeding heavily, and rushed to a hospital in Florida, where a six-week abortion ban had just taken effect.

Doctors knew her pregnancy was nonviable and dangerous. But they hesitated. Cammack asked for methotrexate, a drug that stops the pregnancy and prevents rupture and internal bleeding. Medical staff were afraid to give it to her.

Why? They worried they’d lose their licenses—or be prosecuted.

So Cammack, bleeding and in danger, had to convince them. She pulled up the law on her phone and showed them. She even tried calling Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office. No one picked up. After hours of back-and-forth, the hospital finally gave her the drug.

Under Florida’s abortion ban, treatment for ectopic pregnancies is legal. But doctors say the law is confusing and vague, leaving them unsure—and afraid—when emergencies happen.

Still, Cammack didn’t point the finger at the law. She pointed it at Democrats.

“It was absolute fearmongering at its worst,” she said, accusing the left of scaring doctors into inaction.

Now pregnant again and due in August, Cammack remains opposed to abortion—even after experiencing firsthand how dangerous delays in care can be.
