Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, 51 announced Wednesday that he and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, 48, have decided to separate after 18 years of marriage. The couple made the announcement on Instagram through matching posts in both English and French.
Trudeau expressed that after numerous meaningful and challenging discussions, they have come to the difficult decision to separate. However, will continue to maintain their strong bond as a close family, filled with profound love and respect for each other and the life they have built together.
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other for everything we have built and will continue to build,” he wrote.
Trudeau’s office confirmed that they have taken all necessary legal and ethical steps regarding their separation. Despite parting ways, they remain committed to raising their children together in a loving and collaborative environment.
Trudeau will continue to reside at Rideau Cottage with the children, while Sophie has already moved to a different property in Ottawa. She will still spend time at Rideau Cottage to be with the children and will stay there whenever Trudeau is traveling.
The couple shares three children, with the youngest being nine years old. They had been together since 2003, after reconnecting as adults, and got engaged shortly after. Sophie, who was a childhood friend and classmate of Trudeau’s late brother Michel, has been his first wife.
Over the years, Justin Trudeau has consistently shown admiration for his wife, publicly expressing his affection on various occasions. One of the recent instances was on her birthday in April when he shared two selfies of them on his social media platform. Alongside the pictures, he lovingly wrote, “From this, to this, and everything in between, there’s no one I’d rather have by my side.”
Happy birthday, Sophie. From this, to this, and everything in between, there’s no one I’d rather have by my side… I love you, mon amour. pic.twitter.com/nolrIwnSa8

For the sake of their children’s well-being, they have asked for privacy during this time of transition. The family will still spend time together, including vacations, despite the separation.
