New York City Comptroller Brad Lander was arrested by ICE agents at an immigration court in the city, according to his campaign team.
Lander was “taken by masked agents and detained by ICE,” said his press secretary Kat Capossela in an email to NBC News. She said it happened while he was “escorting a defendant out of immigration court.”
There’s no confirmation yet on whether Lander is still being held. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, hasn’t responded to questions.
The arrest follows another high-profile incident just days ago, when law enforcement handcuffed Senator Alex Padilla of California during an immigration press event with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
It also comes just days after President Donald Trump ordered ICE to increase immigration arrests in Democratic-led states, including New York.
This is a developing story.
