On Wednesday, President Joe Biden called for “greater action” to combat the proliferation of firearms in the US after a gunman fatally shot six people before killing himself inside a Walmart store in Chesapeake, Virginia.
The mass killing at Walmart comes days after a gunman opened fire inside a LGBTQ club in Colorado Springs, killing five people and injuring more than a dozen others.
“Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, one of our most cherished holidays that brings us together as Americans and as families, when we hug our loved ones and count our blessings,” President Biden said in a statement on Wednesday morning.
“But because of yet another horrific and senseless act of violence, there are now even more tables across the country that will have empty seats this Thanksgiving,” he added. “There are now more families who know the worst kind of loss and pain imaginable.”
The president pointed to gun reform legislation that was signed into law earlier this year, “but that is not nearly enough,” he said.
“We must take greater action,” Biden added.
Mr. Biden said he and First Lady Jill Biden are “grieving” for the families whose loved ones were killed in the attack.
