Former President Donald Trump just torpedoed the re-election chances of House Freedom Caucus chair Bob Good (R-VA) by endorsing his primary opponent, John McGuire, a former Navy SEAL and state legislator with ties to the January 6th Capitol attack.
The irony is palpable. Good, a staunch far-right lawmaker, recently made a pilgrimage to New York City to stand outside the courthouse where Trump faces criminal charges, loudly denouncing the judge’s family. Yet, this grand display of loyalty got him nowhere. With House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) refusing to assist Good in his primary bid—a twist given Johnson’s rise to power was partly thanks to Good’s betrayal of Kevin McCarthy—Good now finds himself increasingly isolated.
Social media reveled in the spectacle.
“Major news in the VA-5 GOP primary,” quipped Virginia political analyst Sam Shirazi on X. “Trump endorses State Senator John McGuire over incumbent Rep. Bob Good; This might seal Good’s fate, who initially backed DeSantis over Trump. McGuire now looks like the favorite.”

“Bob Good went all the way to NYC to grovel for Trump,” observed ex-GOP strategist and anti-MAGA figure Ron Filipkowski. “His reward? Trump just dumped him.”
“Two weeks ago, Bob Good went to NYC to grovel before DJT at his criminal trial. It was pitiful,” noted Florida commentator Peter Heinlein. “Today, DJT declares ‘Bob Good is BAD FOR VIRGINIA, AND BAD FOR THE USA’ in endorsing his primary challenger. Good humiliated himself for nothing.”
Conservative Republicans didn’t hide their glee over Good’s predicament.
“I’m thrilled with Pres Trump’s endorsement of patriot John McGuire and condemnation of backstabbing traitor Bob Good!” cheered Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA).
“Bob Good turned against Trump on the day Trump was indicted in NY, then flip-flopped back when his candidate withdrew. John McGuire never wavered. We need unwavering dedication in Washington against the Democrats’ weaponized government,” she added.
“Unfiltered Boss,” a self-described “disgruntled Republican” and DeSantis supporter, offered a different take: “Trump embraces neocon Nikki Haley and says she’s on his team, but betrays Bob Good, who has a perfect liberty score. This is why I keep calling out this establishment con-man—because no one in Conservative media has the guts to do it.”
