Axios reported on Tuesday that more and more Republican Senators are planning on not attending Donald Trump’s Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida next month.

The report noted that five GOP senators already announce that they would be skipping the convention. Those senators are: Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Susan Collins (R-ME), Lamar Alexander (R-TN), and Mitt Romney (R-UT).

“For some, like 86-year-old Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and 80-year-old Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the decision not to attend underscores broader concerns about holding mass gatherings in the coronavirus era,” said the report. “For others, like Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), the nominating convention for President Trump is politically unsavory.”

Trump had initially planned to hold the convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, but decided to change it to Jacksonville after North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said he was unwilling to relax the COVID-19 guideline just so Trump can have his convention.

Florida, on the other hand, has relaxed guidelines and are now experiencing the biggest spikes in cases in the whole country.
