Donald Trump tried to smear Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed with an Islamophobic insult. El-Sayed’s response? A challenge that puts the president himself on the spot.
After Trump suggested El-Sayed should have to pass through a metal detector before being allowed into the Senate, the Democrat fired back with a counteroffer: He’ll go through a metal detector every single day if Trump agrees to take a lie detector test just once.
And El-Sayed already has two questions ready.
“Here’s the deal, Donald, I’ll go through a metal detector if you’ll sit for a lie detector,” El-Sayed said Thursday. “Simple, I’ve got nothing to hide; you’ve got so much to hide.”
Trump has previously labeled El-Sayed a “jihadist,” and during a rally Sunday, suggested the Muslim American Democrat would need to go through a metal detector before entering the Senate if voters send him to Washington.
Rather than simply dismissing the latest attack, El-Sayed decided to turn Trump’s insult into a challenge of his own.
“My first question, Epstein,” he continued. “Second question, did you win the 2020 election.”
The reference to Jeffrey Epstein, the late convicted sex offender with whom Trump had a documented past friendship, and Trump’s repeated false claims about winning the 2020 presidential election, was hardly subtle.
El-Sayed then drove the point home.
“So that’s the deal, I’ll go through a metal detector every day if you sit through a lie detector one time.”
Of course, the president hasn’t exactly shown an eagerness to put himself under that kind of scrutiny.
