Donald Trump found a way to turn Melania Trump’s big White House moment into an awkward public put-down on Monday, questioning whether his wife’s signature even meant anything as they signed an executive order together.

The event was supposed to spotlight the first lady’s latest initiative to address longstanding gaps in women’s health research. Her plan includes a dedicated division at the National Institutes of Health and a White House task force led by chief of staff Susie Wiles and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

But after the couple signed the executive order at a table in the Rose Garden, Trump made a remark that threatened to overshadow the announcement.

He handed Melania his Sharpie and invited her to sign the document. Then, in front of the assembled guests, he said: “I don’t know if her signature means anything.”

Melania fired back sarcastically: “Yes, your signature is more important.”

Yes, Trump belittled his wife at an event centered on her own policy initiative.

Instead of letting Melania have the spotlight, Trump made himself the center of an uncomfortable exchange.
