President Donald Trump has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece, following a damaging report that she asked a Trump donor to pay her $100,000 American Express bill.
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the decision Tuesday during her first-ever press briefing, signaling that Guilfoyle’s time in the diplomatic post may be coming to an abrupt end.
“She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia told reporters.
The announcement comes just a day after Trump publicly signaled that Guilfoyle was in trouble, telling reporters he was “not happy” and that his administration was “looking at” potentially firing her.
The controversy centers on allegations that Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and the former fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., asked Republican donor Eric Deters to wire $100,000 to pay off her American Express bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025.
According to messages reported by The Wall Street Journal, Guilfoyle allegedly suggested that Deters could receive access to Trump administration officials in return for his financial help.
Deters has characterized the alleged arrangement as a pay-to-play scheme. He says he never made the payment.
Guilfoyle’s lawyer has disputed the allegations, arguing that the money she sought was payment for services she had provided before becoming ambassador. The claims have not, by themselves, established that Guilfoyle committed wrongdoing.
Trump had initially offered little defense of Guilfoyle when the allegations surfaced. By Monday, however, he made clear that the reports had become a problem for his administration.
Now, the White House has confirmed that he wants her to step down.
The resignation request marks a sharp turn for Guilfoyle, a longtime Trump ally whose relationship with the president’s eldest son helped make her a prominent figure in the president’s political orbit.
This is a breaking story.
