President Donald Trump has taken one final shot at getting rid of the jury verdict finding him liable for sexually abusing writer E. Jean Carroll and later defaming her. The Supreme Court just said no.

The justices on Monday rejected Trump’s request to reconsider their earlier decision not to hear his appeal of the **$5 million judgment** stemming from the case.

Trump’s lawyers had asked the court to take another look after the justices declined to hear the appeal in June. The Supreme Court rejected the request along with several other petitions.

It’s unusual for the court to reconsider a decision not to hear a case.

Trump had already paid the $5 million judgment shortly after the Supreme Court turned down his original appeal.

But his legal fight with Carroll isn’t completely over.

Trump and the Justice Department are separately asking the Supreme Court to throw out a second Carroll verdict totaling **$83 million**.

That case involves statements Trump made about Carroll in 2019 while he was president. His lawyers argue that he should be protected by presidential immunity from a lawsuit over those comments.

The Supreme Court has not yet decided whether it will take up that appeal.

Carroll, a longtime advice columnist and former television talk show host, accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in the mid-1990s at Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury department store across from Trump Tower in Manhattan.

She testified at the 2023 trial that what began as a friendly encounter turned violent in a department-store dressing room.

The jury ultimately found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll and for defaming her after he publicly denied her accusation.

Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing.

But the jury’s verdict stood, and Trump’s final effort to get the Supreme Court to reconsider his appeal has now failed, and the verdict stays exactly where it is.
