Another Senate Republican just caved to Donald Trump, and Todd Blanche is now on his way to becoming attorney general.
The final vote was 50-49, with Republicans Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska joining every Senate Democrat in opposing Blanche.
Both Republicans warned that the Justice Department had become increasingly politicized and expressed serious concerns that Blanche would do little to restore its independence from Trump.
Then came Bill Cassidy.
The Louisiana Republican had a chance to stop Blanche. Instead, after previously criticizing Trump and even voting to convict him following the January 6 attack, Cassidy **caved and voted for Trump’s nominee.
And just like that, Blanche got the confirmation he needed.
Republicans knew exactly who they were voting for.
This is the same Todd Blanche who has backed making abortion bans permanent nationwide, restricting access to reproductive medications, and creating a $1.8 billion fund that could benefit Trump allies and January 6 rioters.
The same Blanche whose handling of the Epstein files has drawn outrage from survivors and their advocates.
Republicans could have stopped him.
Republicans had the power to stop him. They chose Trump over our country instead. Again.
This is what Republican control of the Senate looks like: Trump gets what he wants, controversial nominees get confirmed, the Justice Department becomes increasingly politicized, and Congress keeps finding reasons to look the other way.
Then they’ll come back around and tell us they’re the party of “law and order,” constitutional government and accountability. Sure.
But November is coming.
If you’re sick of watching Republicans roll over while Trump pushes the limits of presidential power, don’t wait for the next crisis to start paying attention.
Vote. Bring your friends. Bring your family. Bring everyone you know.
Because the only thing standing between this administration and even more unchecked power is the voters.
November matters.
