A two-month-old baby diagnosed with bronchitis was rushed to a hospital on Monday. By Tuesday, he was gone — deported to Mexico with his parents and 16-month-old sister, according to a member of Congress.
That’s the story Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) is putting squarely on the public record.
The infant, Juan Nicolás, had been detained with his family at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dilley, Texas. After falling ill, he was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with bronchitis, Castro said. Less than 24 hours later, the entire family was reportedly deported.
“According to their attorney, ICE deported the family with only the money that they had in their commissary – a total of $190,” Castro wrote in a post on X. “To unnecessarily deport a sick baby and his entire family is heinous.”
Castro’s account states the baby was detained at the Dilley facility before being transported for medical care. Then, despite the diagnosis, the family was removed to Mexico on Tuesday — mother, father, toddler sibling, and the two-month-old who had just been in the hospital.
The Texas Democrat called the move “heinous,” citing the family’s attorney and the reported $190 they had left in commissary funds when ICE sent them out of the country.
The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the deportation.
