President Donald Trump launched a furious attack on California Tuesday, claiming the state’s redistricting and mail-in voting procedures are unconstitutional and “rigged” against Republicans. He called the Democrats’ efforts a “GIANT SCAM” and warned that serious legal action is on the way.
“All ‘Mail-In’ Ballots, where the Republicans in that State are ‘Shut Out,’ is under very serious legal and criminal review,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “STAY TUNED!”
Trump did not specify which authorities might be investigating California’s rules, which allow any registered voter to vote by mail. But he framed Proposition 50, the Democrats’ mid-decade redistricting measure, as yet another attempt to curb Republican power.
“The Unconstitutional Redistricting Vote in California is a GIANT SCAM in that the entire process, in particular the Voting itself, is RIGGED,” Trump said.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt added fuel to the fire during a briefing Tuesday, claiming fraudulent ballots are being mailed in using the names of “illegal aliens who shouldn’t be voting.” She suggested the administration is considering sweeping action to limit mail-in voting nationwide.
“The White House is working on an executive order to strengthen our elections in this country and to assure that there cannot be blatant fraud as we’ve sees in California with their universal mail-in voting system,” Leavitt said. “Like any executive order, of course any executive order the president signs is within his full executive authority and within the confines of the law.”
California voters are casting ballots on Proposition 50, a plan that could reshape the state’s congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterms. Polling shows a majority of likely voters support the measure, which could deliver Democrats up to five new House seats.
Importantly, Proposition 50 came in direct response to Texas’s own redistricting scheme, where the state illegally redrew its electoral map under Trump’s orders to rig elections and give Republicans five extra House seats. California Democrats argue the move is necessary to counter the kind of partisan manipulation Trump orchestrated in Texas.
Trump’s outrage over California’s redistricting is steeped in irony. While lashing out at Democrats, he conveniently ignores his own history of manipulating maps to favor his party.
