In an increasingly surreal chapter of the Trump-Epstein saga, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stood behind the podium Tuesday and dismissed a recently surfaced letter — allegedly signed by Donald Trump and addressed to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein — as a fake.
According to Leavitt, “many forensic analyses” prove the claim that Trump ever signed the now-infamous birthday note.
The letter, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, quickly caught fire on social media and drew the attention of House Democrats, who pointed to Trump’s apparent personal connection to Epstein. The note shows Trump’s signature and warm birthday wishes.
When asked directly during the briefing whether the White House would back a professional handwriting analysis of the document, Leavitt didn’t hesitate.
“Sure,” she said. “We would support that. And in fact, I have already seen many forensic analyses of signatures coming out.”
Pressed for details, Leavitt cited a report from The Daily Signal — a fringe right-wing outlet — which, according to her, had employed “three separate signature analysts who said that this absolutely was not the president’s authentic signature.”
“And we have maintained that position all along,” Leavitt added. “The president did not write this letter. He did not sign this letter. And that’s why the president’s external legal team is aggressively pursuing litigation against The Wall Street Journal, and they will continue to.”
But the pushback isn’t exactly airtight. The New York Times has reviewed the letter and reported that the signature on it appeared “similar” to Trump’s handwriting on other personal correspondence.
That subtle but damning conclusion adds weight to suspicions that the letter is indeed real — or not a forgery.
Trump’s legal team has not released their own forensic findings, and none of the analyses Leavitt referenced have been independently verified or made public.
And yet, this is the hill the Trump White House appears willing to fight on: that this is all a smear campaign, and the signature isn’t real.
Whether the legal threats against The Wall Street Journal materialize into anything beyond bluster remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the Trump team is on defense — and spinning fast.
One reporter noted during the briefing that the handwriting issue could be resolved with a transparent, third-party analysis.
Until then, we’re left with dueling narratives: a signature that “looks similar,” a White House screaming forgery, and a cloud of legal threats hanging over anyone who dares to publish uncomfortable facts.
All while the rest of the country watches this bizarre drama unfold — again.
