Former President Donald Trump falsely claimed on Monday that President Joe Biden was unresponsive to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp regarding Hurricane Helene, suggesting that Kemp had trouble reaching him.
Upon landing in Valdosta, Georgia, Trump repeated the claim at an event with reporters that President Joe Biden was “sleeping” and not responding to Gov. Kemp, who he said was “calling the president and hasn’t been able to get him.”
“The governor’s doing a very good job,” Trump said of Kemp. “He’s having a hard time getting the president on the phone. Federal government is not being responsive.”
In a pointed rebuttal, Kemp debunked Trump’s claims by confirming that he spoke with Biden both the night before and earlier today, expressing his gratitude for the federal government’s support.
“The president just called me yesterday afternoon and I missed him and called him right back and he just said ‘Hey, what do you need?’ And I told him, you know, we’ve got what we need, we’ll work through the federal process,” Kemp emphasized. “He offered if there are other things we need just to call him directly, which I appreciate that.”
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm, causing severe damage and leaving approximately 600 people unaccounted for. Vice President Kamala Harris cut short her campaign activities to oversee federal emergency efforts, visiting FEMA headquarters for updates on the situation.
Despite the clear support from the Biden administration, Trump persisted in spreading misinformation about the federal response, attempting to score political points from a natural disaster
