DeSantis emerged victorious in the 2022 gubernatorial race, positioning himself as the beacon of hope for a Republican Party desperate to break free from the shadow of former President Donald Trump. The stage seemed set for him to dethrone Trump as the GOP leader, especially after Trump’s handpicked candidates fumbled away winnable races, leaving the party yearning for a fresh face.
However, in a mere 14 months, the wheels came off DeSantis’s bandwagon. His attempt to walk the tightrope between Trump loyalists and moderate Republicans imploded, succumbing to the overpowering influence of Trump, a hard-right shift, and an astounding lack of political acumen.
