Former President George W. Bush, who has been mocked over the years for his verbal stumbles, had a major slip up during a speech in Dallas, Texas on Wednesday. The former president was addressing Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine and condemned instead the “unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq,” which he ordered.
The gaffe came as Bush was criticizing Russia’s electoral system and the country’s history of imprisoning or eliminating political opponents in some other manner from participating in elections.
“The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq,” Bush said in Dallas.
“I mean, of Ukraine,” he added.
The former president shrugged off his mix-up by making a joke about his age.
“Anyways. I’m 75,” Bush said, resulting in laughter from the audience.
In 2003, under the Bush administration, the United States invaded Iraq in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. The decision has been widely condemned as being unjustified.
