On Thursday, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene was hit with a new lawsuit accusing her of inciting political violence that led to the deadly Jan 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. The lawsuit seeks to bar the Georgia lawmaker from holding public office, arguing that she violated the 14th Amendment by engaging in insurrection activity against the United States.
The lawsuit argues that “Greene’s statements and activities related to the attack on the Capitol on January 6th make the congresswoman an insurrectionist,” The New Yorker reports.
Journalist Charles Bethea, who broke the story, noted that “a clause of the Fourteenth Amendment specifically prohibits those who have ‘engaged in insurrection or rebellion’ against the United States from holding public office. The suit, citing this clause, contends that Greene ‘is constitutionally disqualified from congressional office and, as such, ineligible to run as a candidate under state and federal law.’”
The lawsuit against Greene was filed by Free Speech For People, a nonprofit that brought a similar lawsuit against far-right Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina, the report stated.
In their argument, the group presented evidence in the form of social media posts and in-person reparks to show that Greene “advocated for political violence, up to and including, her encouragement of the insurrectionists on January 6.”
