Speaking with reporters outside the Capitol building, GOP Rep. Liz Cheney blasted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as disgraceful and said there will be a serious, bipartisan investigation and openly indicated she thinks he is not fit to be Speaker.
Cheney’s comments came after McCarthy pulled his 5 GOP choices for the January 6 panel following Nancy Pelosi’s rejection of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Jim Banks (R-IN), both allies of former President Donald Trump.
“We must have this select committee investigation … And people must be willing to put their oath to the Constitution above partisan politics and above party. And I am absolutely committed to doing that,” Cheney said.
Despite breaking with her party in response to the January 6th insurrection, Cheney still believes Republicans deserve to be in the majority after 2022 “based on substance, based on fact, based on principle, and based on an allegiance to the Constitution.”
“At every opportunity, the minority leader has attempted to prevent the American people from understanding what happened. To block this investigation,” Cheney said.
Asked if whether McCarthy is fit to be House Speaker, she said: “I think that any person who would be third in line to the presidency must demonstrate a commitment to the Constitution and a commitment to the rule of law, and Minority Leader McCarthy has not done that.”
